Types of Travel Insurance and Their Benefits

16 August 2023

Many types of insurance are offered to companies or business owners, one of which is important for you to consider is travel insurance. This will be very much needed, especially if your employees often travel out of town or even abroad.

Travel insurance is a preventive tool if things happen beyond your control while traveling. This is also a form of attention from the company given to employees when on business trips. To find out more, see the following article.

What is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance can help cover losses related to sudden circumstances that could ruin a trip, including illness, injury, accidents, flight or other transportation delays, and other problems. Usually the financial coverage from insurance ranges from 4–10% of the trip price.

When using insurance services, companies usually need to pay a premium, which is the price paid for coverage based on the age of the destination, travel expenses, and others. There are also several insurers that have policies specifically focused on the needs of business travelers, athletes and expatriates.

Types of Travel Insurance and Their Benefits

Your company may have a business routine that involves traveling employees out of their hometowns. It is better if employees also get the right insurance facilities according to their travel needs. Therefore, know the types of travel insurance and the coverage benefits for employees:

1. Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covers many of the types of coverage listed below, combined into one package. Most commonly, comprehensive travel insurance incorporates a 24-hour helpline to help find a doctor or other assistance in an emergency. Not only that, there are also reimbursement for canceled trips, disruptions and delays, lost or delayed luggage, to medical expenses and medical evacuation protection.

2. Trip Cancellation or Interruption Protection

This insurance reimburses the traveler for some or all of the non-refundable prepaid travel expenses, and is provided in the following forms:

  • Trip Cancellation: Reimbursement for paid travel expenses if you are unable to travel for pre-agreed reasons.
  • Trip Delay: Reimburses costs if you are unable to travel due to delays.
  • Trip Interruption: Reimburses travel expenses if your trip is cut short.
  • Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): Reimburse part of the cost if you cancel your trip for any reason; usually more expensive than the other types listed above.

With most of the above, acceptable causes of cancellations and interruptions and reimbursement amounts vary by provider. Acceptable reasons for a claim may include the following:

  • Your disease
  • Illness or death in your immediate family
  • Sudden business conflict
  • Weather related issues
  • Legal obligations are like jury duty
  • Bankruptcy

You may need to pay more or meet more conditions to file a cancellation claim due to financial failure, presence of terrorism in your destination city, or employment reasons.

3. Baggage Damage and Loss Protection

Many travel insurance policies pay for items only after you've exhausted all other available claims. Baggage coverage may have many limitations and exclusions so you may be able to increase or decrease the amount according to your needs.

4. Rental Insurance

Vacation rental insurance covers costs from accidental damage to vacation rental properties. Some plans also offer trip cancellations and interruptions to help recoup costs when you can't use your vacation rental.

Rental car insurance covers damage to or loss of rental cars while in transit, replacing a collision damage waiver by the rental agent or your regular auto insurance policy. Car rental insurance may be a secondary policy to your own car insurance. However, it usually does not cover legal liability or responsibility for damage or injury you cause to others.

5. Travel Health Insurance

Medical cover can help with unexpected international medical and dental expenses, and help find doctors and healthcare facilities overseas. Like any other policy, coverage will vary based on price and provider.

  • Overseas travel medical coverage: These policies range from five days to a year or more, and cover expenses arising from illness and injury while traveling.
  • Medical Evacuation: Can cover travel by air transportation to medical facilities and medical evacuation to receive treatment.

Consult with your current medical insurer before purchasing a policy to determine whether a policy extends coverage overseas. Most health insurance companies pay the “ordinary and reasonable” hospital fees if you get sick or injured while traveling, but few will pay for medical evacuation.

6. Death Insurance and Termination of Employment

If an accident results in death or serious injury, this policy pays a lump sum to the beneficiary who is still alive or you for the injury. Insurance usually offers three parts, providing coverage for accidents and death:

  • Aviation accident insurance: Occurs during flight in a licensed commercial aircraft.
  • Common carriers: Yields from public transportation such as trains, ferries, or buses.
  • Common trips: Occurs any time during a trip.

Exceptions that may apply include deaths caused by drug overdose or disease. Other than that, only a few injuries can be sustained, particularly hands, feet, limbs, or eyesight. There is a limit to the amount stated per injury.

Accidental death insurance may not be necessary if you already have a life insurance policy. However, the benefits paid by travel insurance coverage may be in addition to those paid by life insurance policies leaving more money for beneficiaries.

Travel insurance varies in cost, exclusions, and coverage. Insurance is available for single, multiple and annual trips. This can be considered by the company to be one of the protections for employees who carry out business activities with high intensity.
