Use of Social Media for Business and Marketing

Almost every business sector has provided its existence through social media. However, there is always a social media channel that is most effective according to the existing industry. For this reason, it is important to know which one suits your business needs. As of 2021, here are the five most widely used social media in Indonesia.

1. YouTube

Based on data collected from We Are Social, as many as 88% of internet users in Indonesia visit YouTube to get information. Through YouTube, its users have the opportunity to view, send and share videos.

This means that of the 150 million social media users in Indonesia, around 132 million people already use YouTube. In terms of conveying information, YouTube is a channel that is very easy to access and digest because the output is in the form of videos.

2. WhatsApp

WhatsApp or what is usually called WA is a social media chat. The WhatsApp function is also one of the social media whose users reach 83% of all internet users in Indonesia.

Apart from being used to communicate without credit, WhatsApp also offers a very practical sharing feature. Apart from replacing the SMS function for sending messages, WhatsApp users can also share information very quickly through this social media function.

3. Instagram

Instagram has become a popular social media in Indonesia. This social media, which is popularly used with iOS, Android and Windows phone based applications, is usually more popular among those aged 18–35 years.

Like Facebook, Instagram's features are also widely used by social media users. Around 80% of Indonesians use Instagram social media or as many as 150 million active users.

4. Facebook

Based on Internetworldstats data, Facebook users in Indonesia reached 175.3 million at the end of March 2021. Based on this number, of course it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to capture the attention of its users.

The features developed by Facebook are also increasingly diverse, ranging from personal posts to the sales platform, Facebook Marketplace. Usually, the Facebook Marketplace page will help increase customer reliability without having to visit the website. In this case, the features can be obtained more cheaply and efficiently. The shopping feature has also made it easier for them so they don't have to switch applications.

5. TikTok

TikTok is a relatively new social networking service. However, who doesn't know TikTok now? From what was previously known as Musical.ly, TikTok has become a platform for sharing short videos (with a maximum duration of 3 minutes) among its users.

In fact, TikTok is more commonly used by general (personal) users. Not limited to general segments, now you can also find many celebrities and brands who have joined TikTok.

This is worth betting on because active TikTok users have reached more than 500 million people. The demographic of TikTok users is in the 16–24 year age range. So, brands with a target audience of Gen Z can use TikTok to reach the right audience.

Realizing the potential of various social media channels, Prasmul Eli designed an Integrated Marketing Communication program for marketing practitioners.
